WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF A FREEZE?
Property owners are responsible for maintenance of the water service line from the curb to the house, as well as any in-home piping. If a customer is concerned whether or not their pipes are freezing during extended periods of freezing temperatures, there is a simple way to test. If the faucet is turned-on and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe and expect to take immediate action.
IF YOUR PIPES FREEZE:
1.) Shut off the water to the home with your house valve. Do not attempt to thaw frozen pipes unless the water is off. Freezing can often cause unseen cracks in pipes or joints.
2.) Apply heat to the frozen pipe by warming the air around it, or by applying heat directly to a pipe. You can use a hair dryer, space heater or hot water. Be sure not to leave space heaters unattended, and avoid the use of kerosene heaters or open flames.
3.) Once the pipes have thawed, turn the water back on slowly and check for cracks and leaks.
